DLH’s long-term goal:
"To trade and produce wood products, which originate from sustainably managed forests".
Wood is the raw material on which the activities of the DLH Group are based. We, therefore, have a commercial interest in ensuring that the world’s forests are sustainably managed in order to produce wood for future generations. The forests also have a number of other values and services that should be safeguarded. Therefore, there is a need for all involved parties to take responsibility, and DLH is ready to take its part in that responsibility.
DLH’s medium term goal:
“To become a global leader in certified tropical hardwoods”
DLH is already a leader in certified African tropical timbers. DLH subsidiary CIB manages 1.3 million ha of tropical rainforest in the Republic of Congo and is working actively to obtain FSC certification of the entire forest area. Today approximately 300.000 ha have successfully been FSC certified and it is expected that the remaining 1 million ha will become FSC certified during the next 2 years. In addition to the FSC certification of our own forests, DLH offers FSC certified timber from suppliers in South and North America, Europe, Russia and Asia, and works actively to motivate more suppliers to become certified. DLH is a member of FSC International and we consider FSC the preferable certification scheme in the tropics.
DLH also offers timber certified according to most other forest certification schemes such as PEFC, CSA, SFI and MTTC. Read more about Certification and Verificaiton.
DLH’s short-term goal:
“To know the origin of all wood by 2007”
We use our Good Supplier Program - GSP as the main tool for co-operating with our suppliers on our goals. In some countries, it is necessary to further ensure the legality of the wood by an independent verification. DLH is involved in such VLO (Verification for Legal Origin) and VLC (Verification for Legal Compliance) projects and we are able to offer legally verified wood from several countries. See Certification and Verification and Country Projects for further information.
Other environmental commitments:
A number of activities are needed to fulfil our goals. Some are already being implemented and others are in the pipeline. Below you will find some of them listed:
- DLH will support legislative measures to combat illegal wood
- DLH will co-operate with EU, governments, timber federations and NGOs on eliminating illegal wood and promoting verification and certification schemes
- DLH does not trade in species listed on CITES appendix I, and we only trade in species listed on CITES appendix II and III if the wood is approved by the authorities
- DLH supports protection of High Conservation Value Forests (HCVF) and will discuss this issue with our suppliers in regions where mapping of such areas has taken place and is generally accepted by the stakeholders
- DLH will promote use of lesser known timber species, including plantation timbers
- DLH respects UN and EU recommendations on trade measures with regard to controversial countries
- DLH addresses questions regarding human rights through our Good Supplier Programme (GSP)
- DLH will support suppliers financially to embark on VLO (Verification og Legal Origin) and certification schemes whenever feasible
- DLH will train and motivate our staff to work with environmental issues
- DLH will ensure a good working environment for DLH’s employees worldwide in accordance with our Basic Values
- DLH will maintain a high level of information about our environmental activities and will have dialogues with major stakeholders on this
- DLH will revise this policy in 2008 at the latest
